WHAT IS DHANTERAS?

“Dhanteras”, is one of the famous festivals of India. It is an important part of Diwali celebration. It is the first-day celebration of the five days long Diwali festival celebrations throughout India as well as outside the country. The word “Dhana” signifies money or wealth and “Teras” means the thirteenth day as per the Hindu calendar. The meaning of Dhanteras is puja of wealth at 13th day (in the Krishna Paksha, dark fortnight) of the month of Ashvin according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Goddess Lakshmi puja is held on this day and there is a custom of purchasing precious things and bring it at home in the myth of Lakshmi came at home. It brings home a lot of destiny and prosperity. This auspicious day is celebrated two days before of the festival of lights “Diwali”.

IMPORTANCE OF DHANTERAS:

Bringing new things at home is considered a very auspicious event at the Dhanteras. People perform Lakshmi puja during the shubh muhurta according to the calendar. At some places, seven kinds of cereal (wheat, gram, barley, Urad, Moong, Masoor) are worshipped while performing puja. Golden flower and sweets are offered during puja to the Mata Lakshmi.

This festival plays a great role in the life of every people. It brings a lot of happiness, wealth, prosperity, wisdom and good destiny for all. People clean up everything at this day in order to remove all the bad energy and idleness from their surroundings. People take bath and wear new clothes in order to clean up their body, mind, and soul before performing puja. As this day is the birthday Dev Dhanwantri, all the new innovations related to medical science are established on this day.
